All politics is local and this week our meeting is all local politics.

We are very pleased to present two of our candidates for City Council, Darden Rice and David McKalip. Both are seeking the seat for District 4, which covers the majority of Historic Uptown (excepting a few blocks along 5th Ave. in District 6, for which Karl Nurse is unopposed). Come out and hear from the candidates directly regarding their platforms and the issues of most concern to each.

Tuesday, April 9th Meeting - Suncoast Haven Mission Relocation

For the April 9th monthly meeting, we will have strong representation from the city to discuss the relocation of Suncoast Haven mission to 9th Ave and 17th St. We also have a tentative acceptance from Rev Lionel from Suncoast Haven (or designate) for the meeting. From the city, we’ll have Philip Lazzara, from Zoning and Theresa Jones, the interim Social Services Manager. Our goal is to get the best, most accurate information to the neighborhood in as orderly manner as possible and solidify working partnerships.

We hope for a good turnout. While all of the speakers will take questions, we don’t want to beat the speakers up. Most of the neighborhood’s concerns have been discussed with the speakers in advance. Come with an open mind and good intentions.

As a reminder, the meeting is at St. Anthony’s Hospital, Classroom D. Crime Watch is at 6:30 and our speakers will begin at 7PM.

Bungalow Hop - Canceled (pending reschedule)

It is with some disappointment that we are canceling/rescheduling the Bungalow Hop that was scheduled for this Saturday 3/9.

We didn’t have the level of committed attendance that would have warranted the scale of the event. If it had been a simple porch party we may have gone forward, but the Bungalow Hop requires much more of an investment.

Any monies collected from prepayment will be refunded to the Paypal user by Friday.

We greatly thank those who did let us know they would be attending and we hope that once we have a new date, it will also work out for you. If you were planning to attend but hadn’t yet let us know, we’re sorry. We have to rely on advanced notice to prepare.

We’ll keep you posted on the new date.

2013 Neighborhood Yard Sale

How does it work?

On Saturday March 2 from 8AM to 1PM, neighbors set up their yard sales on their own properties.

The neighborhood association will promote the neighborhood-wide event, plotting addresses of all registered sellers on a Google map, which will be printed and distributed at each of the selling locations. This way, when shoppers stop at any one of the yard sales, they will be notified of all the remaining sellers - a true network event. The association is also planning to promote the event in the newspaper.

What’s the catch?

You can participate in the event if you are a paid Historic Uptown Association member for the 2013 calendar year. You also need to notify us no later than Wednesday, 2/27 in order to give us a couple days to print maps. Dues are $12.50 per person and you can pay via Paypal by clicking the link to the right of this page that says “become a member”.

It’s been a while since we’ve had our City Codes Enforcement Officer out for a meeting, so we’re pleased to welcome Eric Hirvela as our guest speaker this month. In addition, we’ll be laying out plans for the Neighborhood Garage Sale, currently considered for the end of this month.

Nov HUNA Meeting Rescheduled to 11/13

Due to the Presidential Election this Tuesday, we’re moving our monthly meeting out to Tuesday, November 13th

In addition to our normal Crime Watch, the major agenda item for the night will be final 2013 Board of Directors nominations.

When: 6:30PM November 13, 2012
Where: St. Anthony’s Hospital - Classroom D
Park in the main garage and the service desk attendant can guide you to the room.

Serving on the board is a great way to learn about city partnership and processes while contributing directly to key decisions that may have long-ranging impacts on the neighborhood. While it does require some time and commitment, the load is reasonable and made even more so when we have a full, active team in place.

The board meets once per month in addition to the normal monthly general meeting and the neighborhood has on average one additional significant event per quarter requiring boardmember coordination. The environment is social and fun while at the same time structured for efficiency. We all understand that it is a volunteer effort and we respectfully strive to create maximum value for the time.

If this sounds good to you, we ask you to consider putting your name in the hat for the election.

October 2nd is National Night Out

Meet at the Round Lake Gazebo on Thursday, August 16 2012 @ 7PM for our Historic Uptown Crime Walk social event. That’s right - social event. We walk around the neighborhood visiting with one another while making note of potential crime hot-spots, significant codes and nuisance concerns, lighting issues, and excess dumping.

If you haven’t been to one of these, it is a great way to get to know more about the neighborhood and the people in it.

Security Restrictions and Transportation Plan for the 2012 Republican National Convention:

Security and transportation plans for the convention and its events have been developed by a partnership of local, state and federal law enforcement and public safety agencies. Every effort has been made to minimize the impact of these safety measures.

This plan provides the general outlines for road closures, vehicular and pedestrian restricted zones and public transportation. Specific questions regarding this transportation plan should be directed to the participating agencies as identified.

In addition to the identified road closures and parking restrictions near event venues in St. Petersburg and Tampa, there will be intermittent traffic delays and temporary closures on interstate roads and throughout the area beginning on Saturday, August, 25, until Thursday, August 30, to allow motorcades to travel to and from event sites.

Important - New Watering Restrictions

As you know, our community is experiencing an extended period of drought due to lack of significant rainfall. This trend has limited surface water supplies for processing drinking water. The Southwest Florida Water Management District, the regulator of our water supplies, has recently issued Water Shortage Emergency Order #2012-005 for Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas counties for modified Phase 2 restrictions. St. Petersburg is required to strictly enforce these restrictions.

I am requesting your support in alerting our neighbors, customers, and businesses of the new restrictions. I have included a summary sheet of the mandatory restrictions, allowable water uses, and restrictions on non-essential uses. A summary is provided below.

Watering with potable (city) water, water from private wells, or surface water sources (lakes, ponds, etc.) is limited to once a week. The allowable days for St. Petersburg water customers, within the city limits, differ from those imposed in other municipalities and posted by the SWFWMD. Addresses ending in an even number are permitted to irrigate on Saturday only; addresses ending in an odd number are permitted to irrigate on Sunday only.

Hand-watering and micro-irrigation of non-lawn landscape plants is prohibited between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. An automatic shutoff device must be installed on hoses and used at all times.

Aesthetic fountains and waterfalls shall be operated for no more than four (4) hours per day, and the hours must be posted. Exemptions can be found on the attached document.
Car washing is limited to once per week, on the location’s designated watering day. Fundraiser and commercial car washes may still operate on any day.
Restaurants shall serve water only upon customer request.
Pressure washing for aesthetic purposes only is permitted once a year.
NO WARNINGS! Violations observed by Enforcement Personnel will result in a citation. Failure to comply with restrictions is a Class II municipal ordinance offense subject to a $175 fine plus court costs, which range from $13 for uncontested violations to $58 for contested violations.

As Webmaster for Historic Uptown Neighborhood Association, I am please to announce the phased released of our new web presence.

For the past 6 years, HistoricUptown.com has been a shining example of elegant and feature rich communication for our community. One of the crowning achievements has been the back-end operations that most of you don’t see, which allow us ease of administration and more effective communication.

Most recently however, many things have changed in the web world, the largest of which is the explosion of Social Media Networking, not just Facebook and Twitter, but Youtube, Tumblr (the host for this blog) G+, Pinterest, and numerous other channels that are wrapping the whole web in a social. In addition to Social, a vast array of easily accessible modular tools now gives developers great flexibility and numerous options for functionality and look and feel.

Even though we welcome you to interact with us on facebook and other platforms, it has been - and still remains - a priority to maintain our own web domain and home site presence. From this base, we can hook into our Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, or any other channel that suits us rather than placing our eggs in one basket.

The design priorities for the New HistoricUptown.com are:

Make it simple
Make it social
Make it visual
Make it flexible
Make it easy to maintain

Our news and blogging will be here on Tumblr, which easily allows even novice admins to post content of numerous media types while delivering a high level of customization and stability (up time).

This should be a strong start and there is more to come over the next several months.
